Pits, also known as abysses, are areas where no solid ground is programmed, so if Yoshi or another playable character falls into one, they lose an extra life. They are common throughout platforming titles, including every game of the Yoshi's Island series, the Yoshi platforming series, and the Super Mario series.

In the Mario Kart series, the Lakitu referee rescues any character who has fallen into a pit.
