Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 is a GBA remake of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. This game was released in 2002 and is notable for its various changes.

Like all games in the Advance series, it includes a remake of the original Mario Bros. arcade game.

Changes

General

File:World 0 - Super Mario Advance 3.png
Welcome to Yoshi's Island! stage (portrayed as a World 0) on the file select. Exclusive to this version.
  • In the remake (Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island), instead of one pause menu, there are two for pausing an incomplete level:
    • The first pause menu has three options. The three options are Continue, Sleep, and Quit. For a complete level, the fourth option is "Back to Map".
    • The second pause menu is a redesigned and an update version of the original pause screen (from the SNES version --"Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island"). And it allows a use for items and displays the current score for the player.
  • The Mini Battle code was changed in the remake. That is because the Game Boy Advance does not have "X" and "Y" buttons. The new code is now holding down SELECT and then pressing L, L, B, A and R in the following order.
  • Yoshi only has a limited amount of lives in the very first stage, Welcome to Yoshi's Island!, meaning that the World 0 icon is displayed in the file select. Additionally, Lives are now saved, while Extra lives are gained when reaching a certain point in a World's score.
  • A new World score tally screen was added when finishing a level.

Levels

  • A new room has been added in Salvo the Slime's Castle. It is between the second and third rooms in the area.
  • In the extra level Extra 3: More Monkey Madness, this level had 21 red coins (only in the SNES version Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island). In the remake, this level now has the usual 20 red coins.
  • An extra Middle Ring had been implemented into Marching Milde's Fort.
  • The room where Hookbill the Koopa is fought has been redesigned.
  • All of the Extra Levels in this game have been remodeled.
  • Six new levels --called the "secret levels"-- are added in the game (exclusive to the remake). They can be unlocked when completing World 6-8.
  • "Castles - Masterpiece Set" has been renamed to "Ultimate Castle Challenge".

Audio and graphics

  • Most of the SFX for Yoshi has been replaced by vocals reused from Yoshi's Story.
  • Shy guys have a new voice clip based on the one used in Yoshi's Story, instead of reusing the Lantern Ghost’s sound effect like the original.
  • Baby Mario has been given a new voce clip based on by Charles Martinet instead of a stock sound like the original, though Baby Luigi’s remains the same.
  • The audio has been downgraded to match the capabilities of the Game Boy Advance.

Regional differences

Alternate title screen

Template:Comparing Possibly because the game was rushed, the North American, European and Australian versions of the game's title screen only display the logo without a background.
