Chain Chomp, Mario Party 5

A Chain Chomp is a chained-up enemy that acts similar to a dog originating from the Mario series.

Games

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Chain Chomp first appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island in the Yoshi (series).

In the game, only a single Chain Chomp appears in the whole game. This Chain Chomp is located in Sluggy the Unshaven's Fort, though there are other forms of Chain Chomps in the game that are more common. Chain Chomps can be defeated by a POW Block or a Winged Cloud. Defeating this enemy reveals a secret area with a Hint Block in it.

Chain Chomps also have Chomp and Chomp Sharks as more common subspecies of them in the game. Chomps fall from the sky and create endless abysses by delving into the ground while Chomp Sharks float in the air and follow Yoshi the whole time.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

There are three Chain Chomps that live in a house on Koholint Island. One is large and is named BowWow who is owned by Madam MeowMeow. Two are small without the chains. There is one who is talkative and wants to be beautified. She's also where you can dig for a Secret Seashell. If you give her the bow, she can give you a can of dog food.

Yoshi's Story

Chain Chomp reappears in Yoshi's Story, only appearing in the level Jungle Hut.

In the game, these enemies cannot be defeated and thus must be avoided. Also, they appear similar to the Chomp Sharks and have near-identical behaviour to Chomps, both enemies from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Mario Party 2

Chain Chomps appear in some mini-games such as Sneak 'n' shore, crazy cutters and Toad in the box.

Mario Party 3

Once more, they're in mini-games like Merry-Go-Chomp, Game Guy's Sweet Surprise and chainless chain chomps can be partners in duel mode etc.

Trivia

  • Shigeru Miyamoto found inspiration for the Chain Chomp enemy from a childhood experience: a dog once ran up to him and tried to bite him, but the dog's chain held him back.
